Topshop MagazineThere is no hiding that I would love a career in magazine design, just take one look at my portfolio and it’s pretty obvious! Fashion magazines do tend to be the most beautiful of them. So I’ve created a theoretical Topshop magazine with real products.

I am very aware that the stock in the Topshop stores moves to fast to be able to warrant creating a magazine with the latest and greatest trends inside. (They have a lovely email newsletter which does the job!) But if they did have one, I would like to think this is what it would look like!

This is the unfinished version and I will update this post when it’s finished, but for now here is a sneak peek!

Paris Fashion SpreadI think Paris Hilton is fascinating… but in a Britney Spears downfall kind of way. Its obvious, and tasteless but like a car crash you can’t look away.

Using a selection of fashion photographs I pieced together the information and created a brief mini-interview.

I actually love the pictures in this set they have a very American Apparel meets high fashion quality to them, which I am a big fan of!

Marilyn Magazine Spreadmarilyn-1.pngIn response to the recreation of “The Last Sitting” a series of images taken of Marilyn Monroe by esteemed photographer Bert Stern, which were arguably the most famous images ever captured of America’s most famous actress as six weeks after she posed, Monroe was found dead of an apparent barbiturate overdose.

The pictures have inspired me to create a few pages of a magazine spread with the her last interview, originally published in Life Magazine as the content.

Mena Suvari LayoutMena Suvari ThumbThis was a personal project that I started working on when I developed an interest in the publishing area of design and magazine design and layout.

Using stock fashion/celebrity images and information from the internet for the actual interview itself, I constructed a mock up of a fashion magazine interview with Mena Suvari.

I intend to experiment with the differences between the appearance of different magazines depending on their target audience, like the more expensive fashion magazines and the layouts of gossip type weekly magazines.

Photoshop MakeupPhotoshop MakeupThis was a personal project that I took on in response to a story I read in the news. A cosmetics company was fined and given a slap on the wrists for using false eyelashes on the models who were supposed to be advertising their mascara.

They were told that from now on they had to provide a public notice at the bottom of the TV screen noting that they were altering the images. I thought that it was a little ridiculous as most cosmetics adverts, be it in magazines or on the television alter their images, if not with false eyelashes then with photo editing programs such as Adobe Photoshop.

It has become pretty much industry standard, so I thought I would create a tongue in cheek cosmetic range made by Photoshop. There are little features like instead of a lipstick colour - “flamingo pink” for example, there are the colour numbers instead like bf2324

Winterwinter1.jpgThis is another magazine layout, I’m really interested in the high fashion magazines and I think this is something I’m going to be trying out in the near future.

This spread has alot less content than the magazine interviews but I wanted to try something a little different.

It’s occurred to me that both of these magazines have been in black and white so I’m going to try something more colourful next, I think it will have a very different feel to the two last ones but its something I’m interested in experimenting with.

Christina Ricci Layoutricci11.pngThis is a magazine layout that I started to create in January 2008, I really enjoy creating high fashion magazine spreads because I really feel like the photography is beautiful, something that I feel is very important especially when a fashion magazine relies on the images to sell the clothes and accessories in them.

The text in this layout is taken from an interview with the actress Christina Ricci and I feel that these images that are combined with the text really capture the mood of the interview.

(Also, I am aware that the front cover says “hiddem” this is what the letter N looks like, I plan on photo-shopping it in time, I just wanted to get it up on the site for now.)

Lady CanvasLady CanvasThis is the most recent personal canvas project that I started during the summer after graduating university.

This was mainly to keep myself motivated after graduating, keeping busy and keeping inspired are always high on my list and in this case I had an idea about colour and improvisation.

In this canvas I transferred a digital image of a womans face to the canvas and then hand illustrated the imagery around it.

Mellifluous CanvasMellifluous CanvasThis is another personal canvas project that I started upon graduating university.

The idea for this canvas was to explore text and visual descripton, the definition of mellifluous being “sweet or musical; pleasant to hear: the voice was mellifluous and smooth”

I tried to visually communicate these things by how the word was designed, this includes the typography and the application of the typeface.

What I liked about this was that really I could’ve picked a much more flowing font to use but I would rather make this quite structured font look flowing by the ornament applied to it than that.

Recipe BookFoodA personal project I took on when I was feeling rather hungry. It also gave me a chance to experiment with page layout, photography and the programs that are used in the publications area of design. Which is something that has really interested me since I have left university.

I think this is probably going to be an ongoing project that I will just add to whenever I find a recipe that sounds particularly delicious or a photograph that really inspires me, food is definitely another passion of mine!
